But the fruit of the Spirit ( Galatians 5:22 ), Now, "walk in the Spirit, you'll not fulfill the lust of the flesh." And they glorified God in me.". And there were reasons why Peter was grievously in fault, particularly as he did no longer adhere to the law, but lived as one conscious of the freedom from it which the gospel gives those who believe in a risen Christ. You can't do anything to buy redemption. Consequently, without further preamble, and with an ominous silence as to their state (for, indeed, it could not be spoken of), he at once breaks the ground. This must be indeed confusion; as it is, there is none. He warns against "another gospel," i.e., a different one, which was really none at all. He saith not, And to seeds, as to many; but as to one, And to thy seed, which is Christ. an apostle, or at any rate one that says he is an apostle, setting aside what God inaugurated in Jerusalem, not even conferring with those whom the Lord Himself called by His personal summons here below? 15 But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another. has an affinity for both. I. Circumcision is part of the old law that enslaves us. Instead of going up to Jerusalem on earth, instead of endeavouring to effect a junction with the law or anything else here below, the gospel wants no such allies, but repudiates them all. But it works through love. That is, the apostle, instead of regarding his despised freedom from the law as a just reproach, glories in it. It will stand. It has been defined as "readiness for any pleasure." I choose the best facts; for I have no wish to rake up abuses. Do you want a law? Whoever despises the facts of Christianity, as if nothing in Scripture were worthy of meditation, or of ministering to others but exercises and speculative deductions, will be found, if he do not find himself often, on the verge of dangerous delusions, both for the mind and for the walk. They often use drugs, potions; the potions that you'd take, you know, and it'd have their drug related experiences. Paul did not stand alone. Need it be added that he was right and Peter wrong? "I am crucified with Christ." When in the garden, or when on the cross, Jesus cried, "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken Me?" And in these are all the law and the prophets" ( Matthew 22:37-40 ). "In Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature." And what is the end of them? So "cursed is the man that continues not in the whole law to do that which is written therein" ( Galatians 3:10 ). Now Paul said. Nevertheless, there never was one that had a deeper sense of the importance of walking, if need were, alone with God. It is never used in the New Testament at all. So we, brothers, are children not of the slave girl but of the free woman. He also warned them against using their liberty as a license to sin to prevent them from overreacting. Fidelity; this word (pistis, G4102) is common in secular Greek for trustworthiness. 2 Behold, I, Paul, tell you that if you receive circumcision, Christ will profit you nothing. He was saying that we each worship something - we seek to fill the God-shaped hole in our hearts, but our worship is all vain, it's all futile, unless we worship the one true God. "You've been called unto liberty." I was wrong. And Jesus said, "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, with all thy soul, with all thy mind and with all thy strength; and thy neighbor as thyself. And this I say, that the covenant confirmed before by God unto Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, can not annul so that it should make the promise of none effect." The sense is, if you contend with each other; and the reference is, apparently, to the strifes which would arise between the two parties in the churches - the Jewish and the Gentile converts. (Acts 15:1-41) As it is said here, "They gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship, that we should go unto the heathen and they unto the circumcision. It is thus, then, that grace uses it to give me death in my conscience before God. When the prophet speaks of any one living, it is by faith "The just shall live by faith." Venerable religion! What a condemnation of themselves, that no system which ever seeks for an earthly succession can in the least make Paul answer its purpose! This is exceedingly important, and the more as I believe the scope of the allusion to Abraham and to his seed is not often appreciated. And that's the message here in Acts 14:8-20. To this he gives the most solemn asseveration: "The things which I write unto you, behold, before God, I lie not." Again, it is not a liberty to do anything I please. The readers ( Galatians 1:2b ) c. The greeting ( Galatians 1:3-5 ) i. For God considers the poor; He has regard to the simple; He has children in His eye. For he, though a Jew, had completely done with the law, and all that pertains to it. The liberty we enjoy as Christians is not a licentious liberty: though Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, yet he has not freed us from the obligation of it; the gospel is a doctrine according to godliness (1 Timothy 6:3), and is so far from giving the least countenance to sin that it lays us under the strongest obligations to avoid and subdue it. You can't be both. Paul had written in the earlier part, "I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ lives in me" ( Galatians 2:20 ). As wild beasts contend sometimes until both are slain. But now, after that ye have known God, or rather are known of God, how turn ye again to the weak and beggarly elements, whereunto ye desire again to be in bondage?" This epistle, as those to the Corinthians, opens with an assertion of his apostolic place. "Wherefore then serveth the law? Paul says, "If you go on in this way, of which circumcision is the beginning, you might as well end up by castrating yourselves like these heathen priests." How precious to have done with one's sinful self and to begin a life so perfect as Christ's! You couldn't believe the things the Jehovah Witnesses believe, unless you read their screwy attitudes and ideas in their books. Bondage is there; and He is a deliverer, but it is to God's glory, and for His own service in the liberty of grace. Thus it appears that the Galatians as well as the Corinthians had been similarly affected. Thus, if we walk in the Spirit, we shall not fulfil the desires of the flesh. And this leads him to speak of another trial. The mind of the flesh is death, but the mind of the Spirit is life and joy and peace. I have confidence in you in the Lord; I am sure that you will take no other view. "There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female;" all is Christ and only Christ. And become again a spiritual being. And so, when Nicodemus came to Jesus, Jesus faced him immediately with this issue. He does not say, that the Gentiles were under that curse, but that Christ bought off us who were in this position from its curse; for in truth, whatever might be our boast, all we (the Jews) got from the law was a curse, not a blessing; and what Christ did for us was to purchase us from that awful plight in which the law could not but put us because we had transgressed. Had they been occupied with Christ, they would have really loved one another, and in other respects too fulfilled the law, without thinking about themselves or it. This therefore the apostle would have us by all means to watch against. THE PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP ( Galatians 5:1-12 ). The flesh will not be ruling over you anymore. "Yet undergirding all of Pauls admonitions regarding love and service is the reality of life lived by the Spirit, with references to the Spirit being more frequent in Galatians 5:13 to Galatians 6:10 than references to either love or service." Anything else would have been imperfect; but still it had essentially a transitional character. But this was only provisional and parenthetic. It is the liberty not to do those things which the flesh once forced me to do. Accordingly the apostle lays stress on the fact that he was "unknown by face unto the churches of Judea which were in Christ: but they had heard only, that he which persecuted us in times past now preacheth the faith which once he destroyed. The inheritance, therefore, depends on the grace of God fulfilling His promise, not on man's accomplishment of the law, even if possible. To worship the living and true, creator God - and not the false gods, false religions we pursue. Selfishness in the end does not exalt a man; it destroys him. But where the Gentiles are mentioned, God only speaks of seed without reference to number. Therefore, when a man is baptized, he is not, of course, baptized into his own death; there is no sense in such a thought. "The life which I now live in the flesh, I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me," etc. We celebrated that today in the observance of the Lord's Supper. Those who lived in Jerusalem were too prone to preserve the clothes and the cradle which had their place and use at first, but had no claim to be kept up among the Gentiles. Whereas the Holy Ghost by the apostle draws attention to the contrast of "thy seed" (as one) with the numerous seed, with earthly blessing attached to them; whilst to "thy seed " simply, without reference to stars or to sand, no more is annexed than the blessing of Gentiles. I. And mark the difference. He wouldn't bother correcting me. In the latter part of this chapter the apostle comes to exhort these Christians to serious practical godliness, as the best antidote against the snares of the false teachers. This may be concluded from what frequently happens in the divine dispensations, as well as from an express declaration by the hand of Moses. It should be possible to differ with a man and yet remain friends. The language would not have been applicable when the other apostles were called. Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you who are justified [or seeking to be justified] by the law; ye are fallen from grace ( Galatians 5:4 ). He had been himself (could they deny it?) Well, they thought that they had me convinced to their way of thinking. He's talking about rituals and the power of rituals to make you righteous before God, and the issue is, they can't. Do your souls go along with Paul's decision? The allusion is to "The scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe. This passage, however, indicates they are having disputes. But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us [all?]. There is no mention here of grace, nor even of any special powers conferred by the Spirit of God. Hence in this epistle it is not so much the laying bare the need of man of the sinner, as the vindication of that same grace of God for the saint, with the exhibition of the ruinous results to him who is drawn aside from the deep and broad groundwork that God has laid for souls in Christ. Romans chapter six, "Know ye that the old man was crucified with Christ? There is no approach to a vaunt about his dignity. Legal activity is but labouring in the fire for vanity; and if, alas! This is the only sin Paul warned the Galatians to avoid. And so I said, "All right, tell me, when Jesus was baptized, who spoke and said, 'This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased" ( Matthew 3:17 )? The very reverse of their system is true. Now, there are two ways that I can be righteous. But if ye be led by the Spirit, ye are not under the law. This he means here by "faith." For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself ( Galatians 5:14 ). No person can intelligently read the New Testament without perceiving the utter fallacy of such a system; for Peter was expressly, as the next chapter of this epistle tells us, apostle of the circumcision. He shows that the Spirit of God dwelling in the believer gives no license for the action of the flesh. The Galatians did not think of this; people that are thus blinded by the enemy never do. These were his lineal posterity. Such was the case with the Old Testament believers, and many Jewish believers then alive. Be assured that it is the same simplicity of faith which enters into both these things now. The law is never life to the dead, but kills morally those who seem alive. This immense privilege had no connection with law whatever. The persuasion which is being exercised on you just now is not from him who calls you. The new creation is a present blessing that the soul already enjoys. Exhortation to Stedfastness; Persuasives to Stedfastness. The Lord did stamp the testimony of Peter as being truly the revelation of His Father. Next he turns to direct exhortation, the chief salient points of which will call for but few words. They were only, as they supposed, beginning to cherish a becoming attitude toward the religion of the fathers, and of all who had before Christ honoured God on earth. So, Peter uses this same phrase to describe the law as a yoke of bondage. But you continue one degree off on out over the Pacific, and you can miss your destination completely. Nor this only. The apostle does not say, if grievous wolves should enter in among you and not spare the flock; but suggests if they themselves should act the part of wolves to one another; having reference to their controversies about the law and circumcision, and the necessity thereof to justification and salvation; which were managed with great heat and bitterness, occasioned great contentions, and threatened them with divisions, parties, and factions; and were attended with envy and malice, with reproachful words, biting sarcasms, scandalous invectives, and injurious actions, which must be of bad consequence: hence he adds. 1. Therefore reckon ye yourselves to be dead with Christ, but alive unto God through Him" ( Romans 6:6 , Romans 6:11 ). Accordingly the duty here recommended to us is that we set ourselves to act under the guidance and influence of the blessed Spirit, and agreeably to the motions and tendency of the new nature in us; and, if this be our care in the ordinary course and tenour of our lives, we may depend upon it that, though we may not be freed from the stirrings and oppositions of our corrupt nature, we shall be kept from fulfilling it in the lusts thereof; so that though it remain in us, yet it shall not obtain a dominion over us. Peter would have been horrified at such a conclusion. . it has a, perhaps, a naivet about it in that it does trust. You know I've been burned so many times by trusting men, but I pray, "God, never make me jaundiced." I would [wish that] they were even cut off which trouble you ( Galatians 5:12 ). Thus, then, God directed and ruled that the apostle should go up and have the evil condemned on the spot, and at the centre from which it had emanated. So, Paul here exhorts us to walk in the Spirit and to live after the Spirit or on the spirit side of our lives. The allusion is to beasts of prey falling upon and devouring one another: for wolves or dogs to worry sheep is not strange; but for sheep to distress one another is unnatural. If, when I got on board a 747 at LAX heading for Honolulu, the captain would say, "Now, folks, we're having a little problem here with our navigation instruments. They had so completely lost sight of the grace of Christ, the sweetness and the bloom of it, that he travailed again for them: his soul once more passed through that which had exercised him when they were converted. The apostle now demonstrates, from the result, how destructive such proceedings in the church must ultimately prove to be. For the world there is nothing yet executed, any more than the great results of grace for the saints as yet appear in their fulness. Those that were used of Satan, both to oppose the apostle in person, and also to distrust that testimony which they had not spirituality enough to appreciate, busily insinuated doubts into the minds of these Gentile brethren, and found too ready an ear among them. Here it means that tranquillity of heart which derives from the all-pervading consciousness that our times are in the hands of God. When we look elsewhere we end up enslaved. Democracy means government of the people, by the people, for the people. It is not an old creation, but a new one. "Love suffereth long and is kind." It is therefore a feeling of the mind as much as of the heart; it concerns the will as much as the emotions. Judaizers were saying that Gentiles had to join the old covenant if they wanted God's blessings and salvation (cf. It was not to keep people under the law, still less could it be to put any under the law, but to bring them clean out if they had been under it before. It is for the purpose of bringing in transgression, answers the apostle. Very particularly was it marked by the manner of his call, that his apostleship had no connection with either the world or the flesh. Thank God Jesus Christ has set me free from my bondage to my flesh. . Man had his duty to God, and be ought to have. Such was the serious but necessary import of Peter's act. "Thy seed ( i.e., the numerous seed) shall possess the gate of his enemies." Successor to Paul there is none; if so, who and where? For what the law is actually saying to you is that you should love God supremely and love your neighbor as yourself. It is not a question of my loving Him, though this is and must be true of the saints; but this would tend to throw the soul on self, and it is not the reckoning of grace. No one's ever seen this before but oh, bless God, He's revealed it to us in these days. There's nothing that you can add to what Jesus paid. There it is not traced to God the Father, that raised Christ from the dead; but it descends from Christ ascended to heaven (which, we shall soon see, perfectly fits in with that epistle). Here he takes up, not the mischievous troublers of the Gentiles, whom he does not hesitate to call "false brethren," but the highest in office he found there. "Now to Abraham were the promises spoken, and to his seed. What is the difference? They were grieved to think that the Jewish church, with its twelve apostles and its elders, with its manifold links with antiquity and God's past testimony on earth, should seem separated in any measure from the apostle and his work. Secular Greek uses it of the virtue of an Emperor who never lets his private interests influence the government of his people. There was no doubt or difficulty on this head in these early days. (2.) To be under law was fatal to Jerusalem. The word is hairesis ( G139) , from which comes our word heresy. Still less is it possible to let the law set its force aside. Nor did they understand the prophets better. That's my old prideful nature. 26 Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another. He speaks of "the grace of Christ." Those who belong to Jesus Christ have crucified their own unregenerate selves ;along with all their passions and their desires. Later Sarah found Ishmael "mocking" (King James Version) Isaac--this Paul equates with persecution--and insisted that Hagar should be cast out, so that the child of the slave girl should not share the inheritance with her freeborn son. Men were not his source, nor was man even a medium to him. When He gave the promise to Abraham, He said, "I will give." THE INTRODUCTION ( Galatians 1:1-10) 1. What were they doing? I can yield to my flesh and I can blow off steam and I can get in and I can fight and I can get into the striving and the whole issue. The solemnities of Christ's judgment await men in the day of the Lord. A little leaven leavens the whole lump. Uncontrolled temper ; the word Paul uses means bursts of temper. "Paul, an apostle, not of men, neither by man, but by Jesus Christ and," in order to make it still more evident, "by God the Father, who raised him from the dead." Galatians 5:15 But if ye bite and devour one another Another reason inducing to love is taken from the pernicious consequences of a contrary spirit and conduct. That's all the law is saying to you. It was for the chiefs at Jerusalem to judge for themselves, and they did judge to the confusion of the apostle's adversaries. Fornication; it has been said, and said truly, that the one completely new virtue Christianity brought into the world was chastity. He did not forget His people Israel; but He had always the glory of Christ before Him; and the moment we rise up to this blessed Seed of all blessing (the true Isaac, dead and risen really, as the son of Abraham was then in figure), the blessing of the Gentiles is secured in that one sole person, before the Jews are multiplied in their land under the new covenant, and possess the gate of their enemies. I said, "That's a lie." They had somehow become uneasy. If I am mastered by the flesh, then I have the mind of the flesh. 18 but if you are led by (verse 16-18) the spirit, you are not under law. Even if people put themselves under the law, rebellious human nature produces only those evils that the law forbids and that exclude people from Gods kingdom (19-21).If, on the other hand, Christians allow Gods Spirit to control them, their lives become full of the most pleasing virtues - the opposite of those things that the law forbids (22-23). Why did He do that? If, instead of acting like men and Christians, they would behave themselves more like brute beasts, in tearing and rending one another, they could expect nothing as the consequence of it, but that they would be consumed one of another; and therefore they had the greatest reason not to indulge themselves in such quarrels and animosities. There was no difference in the blessing of Christ: man's guilt and God's grace were alike indiscriminate. Paul begins chapter 5 with a bold slogan of spiritual liberty: "It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.". Christian freedom is not licence, for the simple but tremendous reason that the Christian is not a man who has become free to sin, but a man, who, by the grace of God, has become free not to sin. This closes the course of the apostle's argument. Behold, I Paul say unto you, that if ye be circumcised, Christ shall profit you nothing ( Galatians 5:2 ). Read Galatians 5: 14-17. 2. To depart from this was fatal. The law necessarily makes the man, and the man's doings, to be the prominent object. In verse 17 it is written, "In blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore." What the Jews would have liked, no doubt, was power (and the Galatians, after all, were in danger of slipping into the same snare; for the law suits the world, as grace does not), and in the world present power and honour. You see, I don't always do the things that I would. The brethren with him ( Galatians 1:2a ) b. What is good fruit in the Bible? However, this behavior is hurting them as much or more as it is those they are attempting to hurt. It's amazing, isn't it, what difference being born of the Spirit really makes. As God has wrought for us on the cross, and delivered us from every atom of sin in Christ, so He will not allow us to mix one earthly or legal element with the revelation of His grace, which He has made ours in redemption, and proclaimed to us by the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven. In other words, you did not get this from God. Besides, we have a more daily duty: "Bear ye one another's burdens." The truth is the distinctive boon and mark of Christendom. consequences of a contrary spirit and conduct. It is used of the athlete's discipline of his body ( 1 Corinthians 9:25) and of the Christian's mastery of sex ( 1 Corinthians 7:9). (i) One he does not mention here but it is implicit in all his thinking. He's temperant. having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh? then is the offense of the cross ceased ( Galatians 5:10-11 ). And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith," not by becoming proselytes of the gate, or entering on a legal basis, but "foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed." He owned and valued, in its own place, the difficult, weighty, and momentous work which God had assigned to Peter, James, and the rest; but at the same time he stood firmly humbly, of course, and lovingly, but firmly for that which the Lord had assigned to himself and his colleagues among the Gentiles; and, so far from Christ's liberty having been in the least weakened, the apostolic conclave put their seal, with the whole church at Jerusalem, upon it most heartily.
